Deacon Nomination Information

In accordance with the meaning of the work and the practice in the New Testament, Deacons are men who have been set apart as servants of the church. Their task is to assist and serve with the church pastors in the tangible needs of the church to aid in the furthering of ministries in the church and to free our pastors for prayer and the ministry of the Word to which they have been called, as seen in Acts 6:1-4.
Qualifications
To be considered for the office of Deacon, a candidate must be a church member who is in accordance with the Biblical qualifications as presented in 1 Timothy 3:8-16:
  • Worthy of respect (v. 8): He must be honorable in both public and private conduct, living a godly lifestyle.
  • Not hypocritical/double-tongued (v. 8): He must not be hypocritical in his speech, being sincere and truthful.
  • Not drinking a lot of wine (v. 8): He is to be self-controlled in his appetites. This standard prohibits drunkenness and challenges anything that would enslave the deacon’s heart or impair his judgment.
  • Not greedy (v. 8): He must not seek dishonest gain or be materialistic, practicing generosity and giving faithfully.
  • Holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience (v. 9): He must be a student of the Bible and able to communicate the message of the Gospel. Most importantly, he must actively live and profess his faith in Jesus with a clear conscience, both inside and outside of the church.
  • Honorable wife (v. 11): If he is married, his wife is also to live honorably— being worthy of respect, not a slanderer, self-controlled, and faithful, which includes not being previously divorced.
  • Faithful in family life (v. 12): If he is married, he must not previously have been divorced and must be faithful to his wife. This includes physical, emotional, and spiritual faithfulness. If he has children, he must be raising them in the ways of the Lord.
According to 1 Timothy 3:10, deacons must also be tested in these areas. Because of this, a decision on a deacon candidate is not to be rushed. He must possess spiritual maturity and be an actively involved member in the life of the church for at least one year before he is considered, in order for the church to attest to his qualifications. Additionally, every deacon candidate will also participate in a questionnaire, interviews, and deacon training with the Senior Pastor and the deacon nomination committee, as described in the nomination process. Because of the serious nature of this office, all deacons will continue to be held accountable to these Biblical qualifications by the pastoral staff and active deacons. If a deacon is deemed not to be in accordance with these qualifications, it will result in his removal from office either temporarily or permanently, as determined by the pastoral staff and active deacons.
